Why choose colours, paints and airbrush systems for Tamiya model kits?
One of the best things about model making is the ability to create your own designs. No matter what colour combination or pattern you have in mind, the colours, paints and airbrush systems for Tamiya model kits allow you to realise your own ideas to their full potential. What’s more, all products are easy to use and made from high-quality materials that provide optimal adhesion.
What should I pay attention to when using model making colours and paints?
To obtain the best possible coating, follow the steps below:
Preparation
Parts for model kits are made using injection moulding or thermoforming machines. For best results, you should “degrease” (i.e. clean) the surfaces before applying any paint. You can do this applying a primer, by sanding the surfaces, or by using special cleaners. The advantage of a primer is that it provides a better adhesive base for subsequent layers of paint. If you notice specs of dust or other particles after applying the primer, you can remove them very carefully with a fine piece of sandpaper (grit size #2000 or finer). Tamiya primers produce ultra-fine droplets, ensuring that engravings remain visible after application. This is the best way to ensure a good result, as Tamiya primers are designed for all Tamiya paint series.
Colour and type of paint
Before applying any paint, think about which colours and finish (matte or glossy) you want for your model. To avoid purchasing the wrong products, you should also decide whether to use airbrush paints, or whether to combine different types of paint. In addition, bear in mind that the type of primer you use has an effect on the paint. For example, if you want to paint your model red, then you should choose the pink primer for best results.
Drying time
Bear in mind that the drying time will vary depending on the type of paint. While the paint is drying, avoid touching freshly painted parts, applying another coating or doing anything else that may affect the new coat of paint. For best results, apply multiple thin coats to ensure a smooth surface.
Accessories
To obtain the best possible result, you’ll also need a set of tools to match your paint and airbrush products. These include fine brushes, airbrush pistols and adhesive templates.
Tamiya paints and airbrush products – overview of product range
Tamiya offers an extensive range of paints, airbrush colours and accessories for decorating your models. The following section provides an overview of the various product categories:
Primers
A premium primer provides the optimal foundation for subsequent coats of paint, as it smooths out any bumps and uneven surfaces and improves the adhesion of the paint. In our shop, you will find an extensive selection of primers for plastic (ABS/PS), metal ceramic and wooden components.
TS spray colours
Tamiya’s TS spray colours are acrylic-based paints that are ideally suited to spraying plastic and RC models (e.g. truck models and functional models) and only require a short drying time.
PS spray colours
PS spray colours are designed for painting polycarbonate chassis (transparent, painted from the inside), and are resistant to both oil and fuel.
AS spray colours
Tamiya’s AS spray paints were specially developed for painting model aircraft and allow you to create subtle shades and precise details.
XF acrylic colours
Tamiya’s acrylic paints are made from water-soluble acrylic resin and can be applied with a brush or airbrush pistol. XF acrylic paints have a matte finish, while X acrylic paints retain a glossy effect after drying.
Diorama texture colours
Our diorama texture colours can be used to create textured surfaces (e.g. for grainy sand, rough concrete, powdery snow or lush grass). The paints can also be mixed with Tamiya XF paints to obtain a different colour.
Lacquer colours
Made from artificial resin, Tamiya’s lacquer paints have a very fast drying time, are highly scratch-resistant, and can be applied with an airbrush pistol.
Polish, cleaners and ageing materials
Our shop also sells a range of polishes, cleaners and ageing materials, including polishes for different finishes, special cleaning utensils, and pens and powdery colours for creating a realistic weathered look.
Brushes and accessories
Under brushes and accessories, you will find an extension selection of premium brushes for applying paints and lacquers, as well as practical accessories such as mixing palettes and pipette sets.
Airbrush systems
If you’re interested in working with airbrush systems, take a look at the Airbrush section of our online store, where you will find a selection of airbrush pistols, attachments, holders and air control valves.
